Fairytale log house nestles in a clearing in the woods
"Once we discovered that we could build with logs in New Zealand, it completely captured our imagination."
The owners of this classic log house in Tuamarina, Marlborough didn't just choose the perfect building materials for their new home, they also created the perfect setting – a clearing in the woods.
Their build began late in 2010, and the couple say it has taken until the present day to achieve the level of craftsmanship and established maturity that can be seen throughout the property today.
"Log structures are a unique, bespoke process requiring passion, patience and dedication," they say. "Our love for the stunning aesthetic of natural timber has created an internal tranquility that matches the natural beauty of our surroundings here in the Waikakaho Valley.

"And the solidity of our home has always been appealing, as has our ability to build upon its eco-credentials by making it super-insulated."
But now, after 12 years, the couple say it's time to begin a new journey, and they have listed their home with Angus Mann, Michal Wells and Tim Crawford of NZ Sotheby's International Realty - Marlborough.
The 430m² home features a classic log construction with Douglas fir logs teamed with a kahikatea ceiling and Italian ceramic tile flooring. With six bedrooms, with three ensuites, the house would be suitable for a wedding or corporate function venue, or accommodation provider. The owners say they did consider the options, but have not done this themselves.
Despite the traditional construction, the house has contemporary architectural features, including multiple glazed gable ends that maximise the beautiful views and natural light.
"The mix of classic log construction combined with modern architectural concepts provides the ultimate synergy of nature and luxury," Mann notes.
The owners say regular wildlife visitors include heron, kingfisher, tui, weka, fantail, morepork and a family of quail.
Special features of the interior include a farmhouse kitchen with American oak cabinetry, a gallery-style landing that can be used as a second living area, and a projector and in-built screen in the main living room that provides an immersive cinematic experience.
Rooms on the ground floor open out to a wrap-around kwila deck that gets the sun all day.
Macrocarpa-clad outbuildings designed to complement the house include a triple double-bay barn.
The property, at 79 Waikakaho Road, Tuamarina is for sale by negotiation. It is 20 minutes from Blenheim and 25 minutes from Marlborough Airport.
